Keyword Modifiers

"Search" is the most performed function on the web, second to "send." For obvious reasons, search optimization should be in the top five of internet marketers "to do list."
For starters, you must start with the right keywords. The most important step in keyword selection is key phrases. This should be done before you even begin writing your copy and it is something that should not be rushed since it will make or break your search engine optimization goals.
Too many times, people overlook this important step by selecting general keywords. Let's say your niche is potted roses. Two things that immediately come to mind are "flowers, plants, and perhaps "pots." Although you may get some traffic, chances are you will not be able to rank very high because it is such a competitive keyword. If you do manage to produce traffic, the conversions will not likely be favorable because it is not targeted traffic.
Keyword Modifiers
By adding a few modifiers to competitive keywords, you can explore a whole new land of opportunity in deep keyword phrases, which you can achieve high rankings with.
The addition of a few modifiers to your keyword list will reveal a lengthy list of possibilities, which can rank high in the search engines.
There four distinct ways to identify these kinds of rich keyword phrases.
1. Geographic
2. Descriptive
3. Brands
4. Misspellings

Typing in "snow removal," is going to be super competitive, but what about, "Snow removal in Vermont," or "Snow removal in New Hampshire?"

Descriptive

Adding adjectives to your keywords will further attract your target audience. Let's say your niche is handbags -- well, trying to compete with handbags is a waste of time, but what about, "leather handbag" or "black leather handbag?"

Think for a moment. If you were looking for a black handbag, would you search "handbag" or "black handbag?"

Brands

Brand names are also a very powerful modifier. Sticking with the keyword "handbags," if you are selling designer handbags, you can narrow it down even further, i.e.

"Black leather Gucci handbag." That's hitting the nail right on the head, don't you think?

It is important to keep in mind when you are using brands that the

Misspellings

Last but not least is misspellings. How often have you misspelled something you were searching for, but it produced tons of results? This is another clever way to bring traffic to your site.

The key here is to put common typos into a meta-keyword description tag; place them at the end of your title tag; create a box on the web page for common misspelled words.

These are just a few types on keyword modifiers and how to utilize them to your benefit. These methods also work well with PPC campaigns.
